The
name Diwali is itself a contraction of the Sanskrit word Deepavali, which
translates as "row of lamps." Diwali involves the lighting of small
clay lamps filled with oil to signify the triumph of good over evil.
There are many legends and
religious accounts related to this celebration. Regardless of the mythological explanation, what the
festival of lights really stands for today is a reaffirmation of hope, a
renewed commitment to friendship and goodwill, and a religiously sanctioned
celebration of the simple - and some not so simple - joys of life.
In
general, Diwali signifies the light over darkness, of righteousness over treachery,
of truth over falsehood. The light which
dispels the darkness of our ignorance; it is a festival of the light which
shows us the way on our journey through life.
It is a perfect time to revive our inner joy and happiness and provoke this copious
positively and cheerfulness into other areas of our life including family and
the society at large. The time when we gather with loved ones, celebrating
our family, our friends and the prosperity bestowed upon us.
So,
on this day, let us fill our entire beings with the "light" that clean out our minds
and hearts, making a true "fresh start."
