I first saw this quote was on Facebook. My very first
thought was that it was clever and quite humorous. After a while I actually
started to think about it and realized it was probably one of the most amazing
things I have ever read. If you break this quote down to its very core, you can
see that this quote basically describes everyone in this world.
For example, we all know at least one person in our life who
is the optimist, who looks at the glass half full all the time. They are the
ones who find the good in the worst situation. They are the ones who always
have a smile on their face even if their heart is filled with pain and sadness.
Then we have our pessimists, we all know at least ten because
let’s be honest, it is much easier to be a pessimist than an optimist. The
pessimist is the friend you have that always thinks of the “worst-case
scenario” and then acts like it has already happened. They are the ones who
have a frown on their face even if their life is filled with joy and pleasures.
I honestly highly dislike those people because they are always the ones that
bring you down even if it is not their goal because just being around them
drains your happiness slowly.
Then we have the realists who are actually my personal favourite
because they are what I believe to be the “middle ground” between optimists and
pessimists. The best way I can explain a realist would be if an optimist says
that the glass is half full and the pessimist says that the glass is half empty
then the realist would say the glass contained water and nothing else. If he
was to make a decision about whether the glass was half full or empty with
water, he would make the transition into either being an optimist or pessimist.
Now we finally come to the opportunist who I believe are the
ones that succeed in this world because they do not waste time arguing but
rather act and get things done. Opportunists illuminate the phrase “actions
speak louder than words” because unlike the other types of personalities,
opportunists waste no time with words but rather decided to take action which
ultimately makes them the victor.
It is important to remember that discussing things is the
first step to making things happen but it is also important to remember that
discussing things is meaningless if there is no plan to take action. There have
been times when people say things like “that person is bad because he is such
an opportunist and they just take advantage of a situation”. In my opinion people
only say that because they wish they had done it first.
I believe if a person has an opportunity to do something and
it does not bring harm to others then they should jump at the chance to take
action. Those are the types of people who make a name for themselves in the
world. They are the types of people who advance far ahead of the rest. The only
reason people may dislike opportunists is because they believe that
opportunists are selfish and only look out for themselves.
I disagree because I think they are just people who have a
better grasp of how to survive in our world. They have realized sooner than the
rest that in order to be someone in the world, in order to make a name for
yourself, and most important in order to secure your future, you must jump at
every opportunity presented to you.
In the end I believe that we all have all four of those
personalities inside us because there are times when we see the glass half full
and empty. There are times when our common sense tells us that the glass is
merely an instrument that carries the water and there are times that we are
thirsty so we simply drink the water before we lose the opportunity to do so.
Are you a person that tries to see the good in everything or
the bad? Are you someone who sees things how they are and nothing more? Or are
you someone who acts rather than only think because in the end it is for you to
decide. In the end your answer to those questions are what you an individual,
they are what make you unique, they are what make you “you”
